Mayor announces "Shop Huntsville First" campaign for holidays
City TV channel, website will be used to help encourage tax dollars to stay local

HUNTSVILLE, AL (November 20, 2009) -- Mayor Tommy Battle is asking residents to do their part to shore up the declining sales tax coffers in the city by spending their dollars as much as possible in Huntsville. Sales tax collections in Huntsville have trended downward as the nation has endured a continuing recession.

That is why Mayor Battle plans to seek support from residents for a campaign called 'Shop Huntsville First.' The campaign will remind Huntsville residents to shop, eat and play in Huntsville first.

In the coming days, a special logo designed to promote the campaign's message will appear on both the City of Huntsville's website (hsvcity.com) and on the City's government television channel, Huntsville 1 (Channel 16 Comcast and Channel 42 Knology).

"We cannot emphasize the importance of this campaign too strongly", said Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle. "We know that our residents will see the importance of keeping our tax dollars local and hope they will make the Shop Huntsville First slogan part of their daily routine."

Mayor Battle went on to stress the importance of supporting the local businesses that have contributed to Huntsville's successes.

"This campaign is a way for us to ask our residents to invest in our successes - it's part of the cycle in investing in those that make our city successful."

The Shop Huntsville First campaign was launched to curb a decline in sales tax revenue to the city of Huntsville during the past year. Huntsville sales taxes provide the funding for most basic city services - including street repairs, infrastructure and traffic signs; police and fire support; dollars for non-profit agencies like the Huntsville/Madison County Public Library; various arts programs and Huntsville City Schools.
