PARDON OUR PROGRESS: City to discuss Governors Drive improvements 60 day closure of parts of California Street included in construction, project will further improve overall traffic flow and reduce traffic delays in the area
HUNTSVILLE, AL (JUNE 8, 2010) - Phase II of the Governors Drive widening and construction project is about to get underway - and the City of Huntsville wants you to be well prepared for the effort.
The City of Huntsville has recently awarded the second phase of the much needed improvements to Governors Drive. Construction is planned to begin on Monday, June 14, 2010. The project will further improve overall traffic flow and reduce traffic delays in the area. This project involves widening the existing 5 lanes of Governors Drive to 7 lanes from just west of Madison Street up to Bassett Street. The finished product will match the first phase of Governors Drive improvements from just west of Madison Street to Memorial Parkway. The project will also include sidewalks and drainage improvements along the route. Completion of the project is anticipated to take about 18 months.
During construction, traffic flow will be greatly impacted; however, several steps have been taken and measures made in an attempt to minimize disruptions and project duration, thus reducing the associated impacts to residents. One of the early steps involved construction of the realignment of Big Cove Road to the north of the existing Big Cove Road/California Street intersection; this work is now essentially complete.
Another measure includes a 60 day closure of California Street from Governors Drive through the realigned Big Cove Road/California Street intersection during the initial phasing of construction. This closure is necessary due to the large amount of fill that needs to be placed for the roadway profile improvements. Although this will be the most disruptive period of construction, completing it first will greatly reduce the duration of overall disruption. That being said and although the closure of this section of California Street is scheduled for 60 days, the contractor has been given direction to minimize the extent and duration of the closure of the realigned Big Cove Road/California Street intersection so as to provide this key access to the neighborhood as soon as possible. A map illustrating the 60 day closure and detour route is included as a part of this mailing.
A further measure that has been made to minimize disruptions was to include installation of a temporary signal at Bassett Street and Governors Drive as a part of the project. This signal will allow residents safe access to Governors Drive out of the Blossomwood neighborhood.
Finally, as a part of the disruption minimization effort, the City has also added or is in the process of adding additional northbound lanes on both Franklin and Madison Street in order to handle the excess traffic volume that would normally utilize California Street in that direction. The City feels that these measures will assist with minimizing some disruptions during construction.
